How it all Began
|
Carlos’s successful career thus far has
been no coincidence. Since his birth on September 4, 1972 in Santurce,
Puerto Rico, Carlos has been preparing himself for the spotlight. He
first appeared on television in commercials in his native homeland at
the age of 6. In his teens, he began studying the craft that would later
become his profession, and after high school, he went on to study at the
Miami-based conservatory, New World School of the Arts. Around this same
time he made his first appearance as a television host on the morning
program “Hablando” for the Univision Television Network.
While working on “Control,” in 1996 Carlos
filmed his first starring role as an actor in “Sentimientos Ajenos,”
which earned him numerous awards including “Best Debut,” by
TVyNOVELAS magazine and “Best New Actor” by ERES magazine.
The soap opera broke previously established audience record levels in
dozens of countries worldwide. Carlos’s participation on the soundtrack
for the soap opera brought him to the attention of executives at the
record label EMI Latin who signed him to a multi-album contract in 1997. |

In 1998 Carlos released his self-titled
first musical project which was a remarkable success worldwide earning
him a double platinum award in the U.S. and numerous gold and platinum
records in Latin America and Europe. Written by Carlos, the first single
released, “Rezo,” catapulted to the number-one slot on Billboard
magazine’s Hot Latin Tracks just three weeks after its release and
remained at the top of the charts for the next nine weeks. Firmly
cementing his position in the world of Latin stardom, the industry
awarded him accordingly with “Best Pop Album, New Artist” and “Best New
Artist” honors at Billboard magazine and “Premio Lo Nuestro’s”
annual award ceremonies, respectively, among others. Later that year he
appeared in a guest role on “Beverly Hills 90210” and he signed on to
play the role of “Carlos” on the WB’s “7th Heaven.” |

In 1999 Carlos's
album entitled “Todo Lo Que Soy,” hit music
stands. Carlos wrote or co-wrote nine of the 11 tracks on the album and
worked as co-producer. As with his first album, the Executive Producer
of this second project was Grammy-award winning producer, Emilio
Estefan, Jr. The first single, “Escúchame” shot to number one on
Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks demonstrating that once again Carlos was on
the right track.
Teaming up with
Joy Enriquez, in 2001 Carlos recorded
a duet of the renowned Walt Disney classic, “Bella Notte” for
“Lady and the Tramp II, Scamp's Adventure” in both English and
Spanish. He later volunteered his time, along with over 100 of
the best-known Latin artists, to record a song entitled “El
Ultimo Adiós” (“The Last Goodbye”) whose proceeds benefited the
families of the victims of the September 11th
tragedy. This same year he also had a guest appearance on the
ABC drama, “Once and Again.” Most of 2001, however, was spent in
Mexico where Carlos starred in another successful
Spanish-language soap opera entitled “Sin Pecado Concebido.” Not
only did Carlos carry the lead role in the series, but he also
wrote the title track. |

In 2002 Carlos enjoyed one of his most
fruitful and exciting years with the release of “PONCE.” This new album
showcased a new cutting edge maturity for the singer-songwriter which
was applauded by audiences and critics alike. The first single from this
CD was the highly successful “Mujer Con Pantalones” which became an
anthem for independent women everywhere. This same year he wrote and
performed the theme song for the soap opera “La Venganza.” Later he
emceed a special event at the White House for President Bush and other
dignitaries in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. And he rounded out the
year by serving as mentor and host on the Telemundo reality series
“Protagonistas de la Música.” Around this time, Carlos also worked on
the Colombian soap opera, “Mi Dulce Compañía.” |

In May of 2003 Carlos
hosted the “Latin Billboard Awards” and when the “Miss Universe”
pageant debuted in Spanish on the Telemundo network, Carlos was
called in to host the event which obtained the highest ratings
for a television special that year. He subsequently repeated his
role in 2004. In 2003 he also signed on as a celebrity
correspondent for “Entertainment Tonight” and continued working
as a recurring character on the WB series, “7th
Heaven.” He appeared in a cameo role in the comedy “Chasing Papi”
as well as a guest appearance on the ABC drama, “Karen Sisco.”
In 2004 EMI Latin released “La Historia,” a collection of
Carlos’s greatest hits from his prior CDs. Carlos also signed on
as the voice of “Santiago” in the PBS animated series, “Maya and
Miguel.” Later that year he was featured in a guest role on
UPN’s “Eve” and he hosted ABC’s “Celebrity Weddings” special.
In 2005 Carlos appeared in the comedic film, “Deuce Bigalow,
European Gigolo.” Early in 2006, he turned up in Dave Berry’s
“Complete Guide to Guys” and he is also currently appearing in
the film, “Just My Luck.” Throughout the summer he will also be
featured in three movies for Lifetime television (“Stranded,”
“Island Heat-Vanished” and “Break-In”). |

Carlos has lent his songwriter/producer
talent on the albums of other singers in the industry. His song entitled
“Cara Dura” appeared on Ximena’s album, and in 2005 he co-wrote and
co-produced more than half of Chayanne’s newest album, “Cautivo.” The
first two singles, written by Carlos, “No Te Preocupes” and “Te Echo de
Menos” shot to the top of the Billboard charts. In 2006 he went on to
write the theme song for the Mexican soap opera, “Código Postal” which
is currently airing in Mexico and Latin America. |

It is obvious that for Carlos Ponce there
exist no barriers. His talent has spanned the gamut and crossed
well-defined borders ranging from television and film to extensive
musical tours through Latin America and Europe, to serving as host on
numerous key television broadcasts. Clearly he is comfortable and
successful in numerous facets of his career and he is driven by a desire
to raise the bar for himself at each undertaking. |
